The 2012 Warrior Games are slated April 30 – May 5, at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. Athletes from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Special Operations will compete in archery, cycling, wheelchair basketball, shooting, swimming, track and field, and sitting volleyball.

The Warrior Transition Command is currently holding selection clinics through April to determine the 50 Soldier athletes who will represent the Army at the Games.

Wounded, ill, and injured Soldier athletes are assisted by a Triad of Competition composed of a coach, medical personnel, and a CSF-PREP performance enhancement specialist for each sport. This unique staffing combination provides these Soldiers a coach's in-depth tactical knowledge of the sport; a PT's physical support to adapt to specialized movement or recover from training-related pain or injury; and a performance enhancement specialist's advanced knowledge of mental skills training, which comes from the field of sport psychology, to maximize results. This is a unique, world-class formula which really gives the Soldier athletes everything they need to be successful, during the entire training process and competition.

Adaptive sports and reconditioning programs play a major role in the speed and recovery of wounded, ill, and injured Soldiers. These programs are in place at all 29 Warrior Transition Units across the Army. In coordination with the Paralympic Military Program, physical therapists and medical providers incorporate adaptive activities into Soldiers’ treatment and recovery plans.

Since its inception, Medical Treatment Facilities, Warrior Transition Units and Wounded Warrior Battalions East (Camp Lejeune) and West (Camp Pendleton) have seen a more than 20-percent increase in sports program participation by wounded, ill and injured service members.
