Data Standardization to facilitate data exchange among researchers
Is their any need or interest for DOT (Data Cluster Group or other) to lead data standardization efforts for GIS based data, or other data sets to facilitate the efficient exchange of transportation data to encourage collaborative system analysis and planning between modes, MPO's, research centers and regions for a more integrated transportation system.  This will also lead to and promote a more coordinated/comprehensive nation vision for analysis and planning.  It seems like only entities such as DOT, TRB or AASHTO are positioned to coordinate this type of standardation effort and implementation.  The ultimate goal is to collaboratively develop standards for GIS and other transportation data to promote collaboration and exchange for the effective evaluation of system performance and forecasting in an effort to optimize the system using the most safe, efficient and effective transportation resources available.  Any thoughts or comments?
