Ayotte: Now is Not the Time to Reduce our Nuclear Deterrent

Feb 11, 2013

WASHINGTON, DC - U.S. Senator Kelly Ayotte (R-NH), a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, released the following statement regarding a report that the U.S. and Russia will soon begin talks regarding additional reductions to both countries' nuclear arsenals.

"With Iran marching toward a nuclear weapons capability, North Korea threatening another nuclear test, and China and Russia modernizing their nuclear arsenals, now is not the time for further reductions to our nuclear deterrent - especially when the administration hasn't fully honored its past modernization commitments. The president should instead focus on modernizing our nuclear arsenal, stopping Iran and North Korea from expanding their nuclear capabilities, and ensuring Russia is complying with past arms control agreements-rather than pursuing a destabilizing agenda that will only make us less safe."
