The goal of the Laboratory's University Relations Program is to foster collaborations and sustain long-term academic partnerships between Laboratory scientists and engineers and the academic community. The Laboratory engages students and faculty in collaborative research and development, work study opportunities, and educational activities that support DOE/NNSA programmatic objectives, address national security workforce needs, and enhance community awareness and understanding of science, the DOE/NNSA, and the Laboratory.
Key components of university relations include the Lawrence Scholar Program, which employs graduate students to conduct their Ph.D. thesis research at the Laboratory; the Postdoctoral Program, which provides opportunities for recent Ph.D.s to conduct innovative scientific research; the prestigious Lawrence Fellow postdoctoral award; and the University of California Lab Fees Research Program, which engages UC faculty and graduate students with Laboratory scientists in research that takes unique advantage of Laboratory facilities and expertise. In addition, the Laboratory has several institutes and centers that provide university collaborators with access to unique capabilities for use in basic and applied research.
