The Department of Veterans Affairs has established new measures to ensure all inpatient surgeries are performed under the safest possible conditions at facilities with the resources to support them. VA assigned each of its medical centers an inpatient "surgical complexity" level.

Specialty Care Services (SCS) is composed of a number of components that are designed to ensure that the best overall preventive, clinical, spiritual and religious, and nutritional care is made available to the veteran patient.

The national program directors and chiefs for each area under SCS report directly to the SCS Chief Consultant. Examples of these National Programs are: Eye Care, Nutrition, Oncology, Diabetes, Renal Diseases, Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Diseases, Surgery, Podiatry, Pain Management, Solid Organ and Bone Marrow/Stem Cell Transplantation, Anesthesia, Infectious Diseases, Neurology, and Chaplain Services.
