Introduction

Pipelines affect each and every one of us--they deliver the resources to heat our homes and fuel our cars. Pipelines are the safest way to deliver these resources, and major failures are rare. However, over the past few years a few devastating pipeline failures have occurred. U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood instructed USDOT to take a hard look at our nation’s pipeline infrastructure and report the findings to the public.

The Pipeline Safety Update provides the actions taken by USDOT, the states, communities and pipeline operators, including the passage of the Pipeline Safety, Regulatory Certainty and Job Creation Act of 2011. It also includes an overview of the nation’s pipeline infrastructure, the factors that affect pipeline safety and the role of stakeholders in pipeline safety.

The Pipeline Safety Update is dynamic – it will be updated as new data arrive. It will also become a hub for updates on safety regulations, public comment opportunities and other initiatives, so be sure to bookmark this site. Updates will also be provided on Twitter using #PipelineUpdate.
