Presentations on generating, transmission equipment and protection, governor response, and voltage regulating equipment. Power system dynamics are reinforced by problem solving exercises in the Miniature Power System.
Provides a basic overview of electricity and how the electrical power system works. The implications of having an inter-connected nation-wide power system are presented through demonstrations of key concepts in the EPTC’s Miniature Power System.

This course is a follow up to the Overview of Electric Power Systems and provides a deeper understanding of the generation and transmission of electrical power. Students are provided an up-close view of the material by touring a dispatch center and a high-voltage substation.

Students in this course will study selected NERC Standards and examine whether the proper application of said Standards could have avoided or mitigated Disturbances including the 2003 Eastern Interconnection Disturbance and the 2011 Arizona – Southern California Outage (San Diego Blackout). 24 CEs awarded for successful completion (OPS Topics: 24; Standards 24).
