Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory

Energy and
Environmental Security

Advancing our nation's security through the production, development, and deployment of energy resources and technology while understanding and reducing their environmental impacts.

What we do

Laboratory scientists and engineers are working nonstop to identify key elements, opportunities, and challenges in an evolving energy landscape. Using state of the art tools and multidisciplinary expertise the Laboratory is answering these challenges through the development of:

  • Innovations to expand the use of renewable energy through unmatched technology, improved efficiency, new resources, systems integration, and reduced costs
  • Systems to deliver climate simulations at the regional scale to understand the critical processes that drive climate change
  • Advanced nuclear fuels and reactor systems that are proliferation-resistant and provide for expanded safe, secure, carbon-free, cost-competitive nuclear power
  • Science and advanced technology needed to effectively store nuclear waste for long times or eliminate the nuclear waste altogether
  • Science, technology, and operational protocols that increase the utilization of the nation's large and secure reserves of conventional and unconventional fossil fuels while safely eliminating carbon dioxide emissions through innovations in carbon capture and long-term geologic sequestration.
