Warden Messages

Uzbek Elections/Holiday Season

12/21/2007

The following is a message distributed through the Consular Warden System of the American Embassy in Tashkent.

The Republic of Uzbekistan will hold Presidential elections on Sunday, December 23, 2007.  The Embassy would like to inform American citizens residing and/or traveling in Uzbekistan that the Government of Uzbekistan may increase security throughout the country and particularly in Tashkent.  Policemen may stop citizens for additional document checks.  As always, be respectful of requests from law enforcement professionals.  The Embassy encourages American citizens to exercise caution on this day and avoid large public places.

Also, with the holiday season here and the associated worldwide risk of possible terrorist action, remain aware of your surroundings and vigilant about your personal security.  Avoid attracting unnecessary attention to yourself.  Always try to remain informed about what’s going on locally, and avoid large public places.

The U.S. Embassy in Uzbekistan is located at 3, Moyqo’rghon Street, 5th Block, Yunusobod District, Tashkent, Uzbekistan 100093. The main telephone number is 998-71-120-5450. The fax number is 998-71-120-6335.

The website is http://uzbekistan.usembassy.gov.  For the latest security information, Americans traveling abroad should regularly monitor the Department's Internet web site at http://travel.state.gov where the Worldwide Caution Public Announcement, Central Asia Regional Public Announcement, and the Uzbekistan Consular Information Sheet and Travel Warning can be found. Up-to-date information on security can also be obtained by calling 1-888-407-4747 toll free in the United States and Canada, or, for callers outside the United States and Canada, a regular toll line at 1-202-501-4444. These numbers are available from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time, Monday through Friday (except U.S. federal holidays).
