US military visit

Canberra — 13 January 2010

13 January 2010

Two of the United States’ most senior military leaders will meet with Australian Defence officials on Monday as part of the 25th annual Australia-US ministerial (AUSMIN) talks.

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Michael Mullen, and Commander Pacific Command Admiral Robert Willard are likely to address regional security issues, as well as global terrorism in the wake of the failed attack on a US airliner on Christmas Day.

Admiral Mullen serves as the principal military advisor to the US President, the Secretary of Defense, the National Security Council and the Homeland Security Council.

Admiral Willard is responsible for the world's largest fleet command, encompassing 259 million square kilometres and approximately 180 ships, 1500 aircraft, and 125 000 US Defense members.

Their AUSMIN discussions will also focus on President Obama’s recently revised strategy for Afghanistan and Pakistan and the Australian and US commitment to both countries.

Building on the close relationship between both defence forces, Admiral Mullen will address ADF and Defence Department members early next week.

AUSMIN is scheduled annually, with the venue alternating between Australia and the United States.
