John N. Ries is a career diplomat with the United States Department of State, assigned as the U.S. Consul General in Sapporo, Japan, from August 2010.

After joining the Foreign Service in 1990, he completed assignments at U.S. Embassies in Sierra Leone, Italy, Japan, and Trinidad & Tobago, and at the Department of State in Washington DC in positions focusing on international economic policy, including development finance, trade and investment.

He was born in Frankfurt, Germany, and grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio. He graduated from Harvard University in 1986 with a bachelor's degree in modern European history and literature and completed the Foreign Service Institute's economic and commercial studies program in 1996. He enjoys hiking, bicycling, cross country skiing, and playing jazz trombone.

He is accompanied in Sapporo by his wife Barbara Neu and their son Claudio.
