Resources for English Teachers

The Cultural Affairs Office interacts with public and private educational institutions in the United States and France as well as with both countries' Ministries of Education to develop and implement a wide variety of programs in support of common education goals.

Support is also provided for the American Studies community throughout France – students, teachers and scholars whose professional focus is American society and culture, past and present.

English Teaching Forum

The English Teaching Forum, published four times a year (January, April, July, and October) for the teachers of English can be read online.  This journal includes articles written by English teachers for English teachers on methodology, teacher training, applied linguistics, and classroom techniques. Special sections include "News and Views," "Letters to the Editor," "Teacher Correspondents," and "The Lighter Side."

Material for English Teaching

The U.S. Department of State offers a range of resources and materials that support high-quality English language instruction worldwide. These resources are aimed at supporting teachers of English outside of the U.S.
Printed materials include:

  • Celebrate: Holidays in the U.S.A.! discusses the ten federally-recognized holidays in the United States, as well as many celebratory days, such as Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day, and recognition months, such as Black History Month and Women's History month, that are commonly celebrated.
  • E-Journals contain ready-to-use lesson plans and are suitable for students at the intermediate level.
  • Language and Civil Society E-Journals cover aspects of building and maintaining civil society in order to help students improve their critical thinking and analytical skills in addition to learning English. Chapters include:
    Civic Education Environmental Education Peace Education Business Ethics
  • Language and Life Sciences E-Journals serve as a springboard for a meaningful discussion in English about issues that confront all of us as science and technology evolve.
    Chapters include:
    Mapping the Human Genome Controversial Issues in Gene Research Biotechnology and Crop Engineering Drugs of the Future
  • English Teaching Forum is a quarterly journal published by the U.S. Department of State for teachers of English as a foreign or second language. Most of the authors of the articles are classroom teachers.
  • Essential Bibliography is an annotated list of key commercial references and teaching resources related to the professional development of teachers of English as a foreign language. The titles included in the bibliography were selected by the author of the document and do not constitute an endorsement by the Department of State.
  • The Publications Catalog contains over 80 printed titles are produced by the Department of State and distributed to teachers of English outside of the U.S. through U.S. Embassies and Consulates around the world.
  • Teaching Pragmatics explores the teaching of pragmatics, which is the ability of language users to match to find socially appropriate language for the situations that they encounter.

Resources for students

Special English broadcasts to different parts of the world several times a day, seven days a week.  Each half-hour broadcast begins with:

  • The latest news from around the world
  • A different short feature every day about development, agriculture, health, education, economics, news events and American idioms. 
  • 15-minute in-depth features about life in the U.S., news about science and space, American history, popular culture, influential Americans and short stories. Each story on this site has a transcript and MP3 recording.
