    Inside the U.S. Embassy: Youth Leaders Learn about the Functions of a Diplomatic Mission

    A group of forty leaders of Yaounde-based youth organizations visited the U.S. Embassy on September 13, 2012, to acquaint themselves with the functions of an American diplomatic mission abroad through presentation from Embassy officials and a tour of the Embassy Information Resource Center.

    U.S. Ambassador Launches the Third English Access Program for Cameroon

    On September 12, 2012, Ambassador Jackson launched another English Access Microscholarship Program for Cameroon. In August 2011, we started with 30 students here at the American Language Center. Today, including this new group, a total of 92 Cameroonian youth are benefiting from English language instruction at the Yaounde Pilot Linguistic Center and at the American Language Center of Yaounde under the Access program. This represents a total investment by the U.S. Government of more than 75 million CFA francs in support of Cameroon’s effort to train future leaders. Ambassador's Speech »

    Youth Symposium: Connecting Youth Organizations Nationwide

    On August 27, 2012, the United States Embassy in Yaounde held a Young African Leaders Youth Symposium entitled Cameroon – Young African Leaders – Connect. Ambassador Robert P. Jackson opened the event, premised on President Obama’s Young African Leaders (YAL) Initiative.

    Vital Voices and Cameroonians Work Together to Fight Human Trafficking

    The US government funded a workshop in Yaounde on July 24 and 25 to help in the fight against human trafficking. Led by Vital Voices and local partner Nku’Mu-Fed Fed, the workshop offered training to Cameroonian officials on how to conduct trafficking investigations that balance prosecution of suspects with victims’ needs. The participants also received congratulations on the expansion of Cameroon’s law against human trafficking and talked about ways to strengthen the law even more to eliminate all forms of trafficking.

    Arts Envoy Program: Stepping it up with Soul Steps in Cameroon

    The most culturally informed Cameroonian has only heard about step dance from the media. Thanks to an Arts Envoy program, many Cameroonians had the unique opportunity to watch a step dance performance live with Soul Steps, a group of four talented dancers from New York: Maxine Lyle, Angela Brackett, Dionne Norton and Heather DeLeon.

    Access Students Learn about American Life through Storytelling

    American Language Center Yaounde English Access Program participants created stories about American life using "Picture US," a set of photographs on real American life, with Embassy Education Advisor Fatimah Mateen and local student intern Veronique Hob Hob.

    Global Town Hall with Civil Society – Cameroonian Leaders Participate

    Over thirty influential civil society leaders from across Cameroon gathered at the Embassy May 16 to view Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s Global Town Hall Meeting on Civil Society as part of the U.S. government’s Strategic Dialogue with Civil Society 2012 Summit in Washington.

    U.S. Marines Teach Women’s Self Defense

    In honor of Women’s Month, the U.S. Marines stationed at the Embassy in Yaoundé taught 50 women how to defend themselves against gender-based violence. The two-hour course featured basic techniques to ward off physical and sexual assaults, as well as examined ways to better assess one’s environment and risk factors. The training focused on the most common attacks against women in Cameroon, and incorporated weapons and punching bags during the practice session.

    U.S. Embassy Holds Journalist Workshops on covering Civil Society and Political Parties

    The U.S. Embassy Yaoundé, Cameroon conducted two workshops for journalists on the tools, techniques and best practices for the coverage of civil society and political parties. The workshops were held in Douala on March 12-13, and in Limbe on March 15-16.

    On Saturday, January 21, 2012, Cameroon participants in the English Access Microscholarship program organized an event to commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The first act of the program featured activities by the students themselves.
