WELCOME TO USAID | LEBANON

Side-by-side with the Lebanese people, the U.S. Agency for International Development works to improve the lives of the Lebanese people through development projects that foster stability and democracy. This partnership between the people of America and Lebanon dates back to 1951, and continues in strength today.

The American people are contributing $109 million to USAID’s programs in Lebanon in 2010. USAID invests those funds in a range of areas that Lebanon has identified as priorities including support for increasing democratic pratices and promotion of the rule of law; strengthening civil society within the country; capacity develoment of teacher skills and improved learning environments in public schools; reducing pollution of the Upper Litani River and improving water management; and increasing incomes and expanding job creation.

17 BEKAA WATER ESTABLISHMENT (BWE) STATION OPERATORS AND LABORATORY STAFF RECOGNIZED FOR THEIR WORK GIVING MORE THAN 100,000 PEOPLE ACCESS TO SAFE DRINKING WATER

On January 10, 2012, USAID awarded certificates to 17 Bekaa Water Establishment (BWE) pump station operators and eight laboratory staff for successfully completing training on chlorination system operation and laboratory equipment usage.  The training was provided in connection with installation of 17 potable water chlorination systems granted by UNICEF and water testing laboratory equipment provided by USAID. More than 100,000 people (32% of population served in the Bekaa) will now have access to safe drinking water in their homes.  USAID and American University of Beirut are developing a comprehensive long-term water monitoring plan for the BWE and ensuring its implementation by providing additional laboratory equipment and training.

4/24/2012: USAID Assistant Administrator Mara Rudman Completes Visit to Lebanon

U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Assistant Administrator for the Middle East Mara Rudman completed her visit to Lebanon today by participating in Rural Tourism Day in Baskinta. 

In the decades before the civil war, Lebanon was a renowned tourist destination, popular not only for Beirut’s cosmopolitan flair and nightlife, but also for its Mediterranean beaches, historic sites, and mountainous ski areas.  Thirty years of conflict and political instability dramatically reduced the number of tourists and Lebanon’s most beautiful destinations became neglected.

4/23/2012: USAID Assistant Administrator Mara Rudman Visits LebanonU.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Assistant Administrator for the Middle East Mara Rudman visited Lebanon today to see first hand how USAID is working with the Government of Lebanon to improve economic opportunities for Lebanese citizens, from students to farmers.  Ms. Rudman met with Minister for Education and Higher Education Dr. Hassan Diab and toured various USAID project sites, engaging with partners and USAID project beneficiaries in Saida. read more...

4/21/2012: U.S. Embassy Celebrates Earth Day in QlaiaaThe U.S. Embassy celebrated Earth Day with local students and their families in Qlaiaa today at the School Environmental Education and Reforestation Festival, sponsored by the U.S. Government and hosted by the Qlaiaa municipality and Reforest Lebanon, a local NGO.  Deputy Chief of Mission Richard M. Mills, Jr. and representatives from the Ministry of Environment were on hand to help celebrate the recent reforestation of 26 hectares of Qlaiaa municipal lands with over 25,000 trees. read more...
