How to Apply for a U.S. Visa
Introduction:
To better serve the needs of nonimmigrant visa applicants, we have instituted an online visa appointment service.
The embassy strongly encourages intending travelers to apply for visas well in advance of their proposed journey, and to always refrain from making irrevocable travel plans until the visa has been issued and they are in receipt of their passport and visa.
The Suva Consular District includes the following: Fiji, Tuvalu, Nauru, Kiribati, Tonga, French Polynesia, New Caledonia and Wallis & Futuna. If you do not reside in the Suva Consular District, but you would like to apply for a nonimmigrant visa in Suva, please read carefully the following information on this link.
Note: Must have a current, valid passport with at least 6 months remaining until it expires. There must be at least one empty page within the passport to adhere a visa if it is approved.
Step 1: Please visit the GSS website for details regarding visa types, application requirements, and application fees.
Step 2: Pay the visa application fee at any Post Fiji for applicants in Fiji or Western Union for applicants from outside Fiji.
Step 3: Complete the visa application (Form DS-160) online. Print the Confirmation Page when finished.
Step 4: Go to the GSS website to make an appointment for an interview at the Embassy, or call the GSS call center:- applicants from within Fiji can access both: 00800-2552 or +679 995 9643. Outside of Fiji applicants with access to a landline can call 00800-2552, or by cell +679 995 9643. (You must wait at least 1 day after paying the fee). When making an appointment, you will also choose where you want your passport sent if your visa is approved.
Step 5: Come to the Embassy for your interview on the appointed day. Plan to arrive at least 15 minutes early. In addition to your supporting documents for the visa application listed on each visa type page, you must bring your passport, DS-160 confirmation page, a printed copy of your appointment letter, a photo, and the original visa fee payment receipt.
Step 6: Passports with visas will be returned to you at your home or business at no extra cost, or you may pick them up at 51 Post Fiji locations. You will specify the method and address when you make your appointment (Step 4).
All applicants must be ready to present the following documents when making an appointment;
- Passport: Current, valid passport with at least 6 months remaining until it expires.
- Application Form Confirmation: DS-160 confirmation page.
- Photograph: A 2” X 2” size color passport photo with a white background, taken within the last six months. Information regarding photo requirements.
- Supporting Documentation: Any extra documents should demonstrate the applicant's family, financial, employment, and/or other ties to their country of residence. Furthermore, applicants must show legal intent, credible plans, and sufficient resources for the period of travel. Finally, they must show that they will not need or seek unauthorized employment, studies, or public support during their stay. Each applicant must establish eligibility for a visa based on his/her own merits. The presence of a sponsor in the United States does not overcome the presumption that the applicant is an intending immigrant nor does the applicant's purpose of travel. "Sponsorship letters" are NOT required.
We are required to interview and fingerprint all applicants from ages 14 to 79 years.
Applicants below 14 years and above 80 years, are exempted from the personal appearance/interview requirement. Please note a consular officer may request applicants who are exempted from the personal appearance requirement to come in for an interview.
We urge persons who know they will be traveling to apply early. Unfortunately, we will be able to make earlier appointments ONLY in emergency cases, i.e., life or death situations, and in cases regarding students and exchange program participants. Hence, we will not be able to make earlier appointments because a flight, a conference, or other travel opportunity will be missed.
