Messages for U.S. Citizens

Security Message to U.S. Citizens:

October 29, 2012 - Sierra Leone Visas / Local Immigration Checks.

On several recent occasions immigration officials have stopped foreign travelers in Sierra Leone at roadside checkpoints, particularly in the Kono area.  The Immigration Officials request to see documentation and proof that the traveler is legally in the country--which includes a passport and valid visa.  These types of requests are legal, and it is within the purview of the Immigration Officials to request these documents.  Please remember to bring your passport (with visa) when traveling outside of Freetown.  After showing legitimate documents to Immigration Officials, most people have been able to freely continue on their way.

U.S. citizens that require Sierra Leone visas to enter the country should ensure that their visas remain current. Some U.S. citizens have experienced difficulty when departing the country with expired Sierra Leone visas.
