U.S. Passports

General Information

Embassies overseas are no longer authorized to issue regular U.S. passports. All non-emergency passports are now processed in the United States.  The Embassy in Quito will accept your passport application and forward it to the U.S. for processing. A passport, once approved, normally arrives at the Embassy and is ready for pick-up within 10 to 15 working days.

The Embassy is authorized to issue limited-validity passports in emergencies. Be advised, though, that a lack of planning does not constitute an emergency.

Passport services reminder

For passport services you need to schedule an appointment.

No appointment is necessary to pick up an issued passport Monday through Thursday between the hours of 1:00 and 3:00 p.m.

Important Notice

American citizen dual nationals may enter Ecuador on a non-U.S. passport, but Ecuadorian immigration will require such individuals to present a U.S. passport with a minimum of six months remaining validity during exit controls if traveling to the United States.  If a traveler enters Ecuador as a dual national then he/she must also depart as a dual national by presenting both passports.  Dual nationals (Ecuadorian/American) may enter Ecuador as an Ecuadorian citizen, claiming dual nationality upon entry, and must show evidence of Ecuadorian citizenship upon entry and departure.  Additionally, Ecuadorian immigration requires U.S. citizen children born in Ecuador (and thus Ecuadorian citizens) to present a valid Ecuadorian passport in order to exit Ecuador the first time only.  For information on how to apply for an Ecuadorian passport, please click here.
