Mr. Schofer is currently the Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Nicosia, Cyprus.  As of July 24, 2011, he is also serving as Chargé d'Affaires pending the arrival of the next U.S. Ambassador to Cyprus. 

Mr. Schofer joined the Foreign Service of the U.S. State Department in 1991.  As a Political Officer, he worked overseas at the U.S. Embassies in Kuwait City, Kuwait (1991-1993), Manama, Bahrain (1993-1995), and Moscow, Russia (2000-2003), where he headed the Political Section’s External Affairs Unit.  More recently, Mr. Schofer served as the Counselor for Political Affairs at the U.S. Embassy in The Hague (2004-2008), and as Counselor for Narcotics Affairs at the U.S. Embassy in Kabul (2008-2009). 

Mr. Schofer’s Washington assignments included postings in the State Department's Bureau of Intelligence and Research (1995-1996), on the Iraq Desk of the Bureau of Near East and North African Affairs (1996-98), and as Special Assistant to Under Secretary for Political Affairs Thomas Pickering (1998-99).   From August 2009 to July 2011, Mr. Schofer served as the Director of the Political Training Division at the U.S. State Department's Foreign Service Institute.

Mr. Schofer has a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science and International Relations from Yale University (1985) and a Master’s Degree in International Affairs from Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs (1989).  He also studied at the American University in Cairo (1985-87) on a Rotary Fellowship. 

Mr. Schofer is married to Karen Lynn Enstrom, also a Foreign Service Officer, and has two children.  He has studied Arabic, Russian, and Dutch.
