The Department is required by law to recover the cost of processing nonimmigrant visas through the collection of the visa application fee in certain categories of nonimmigrant visas are more complicated and require more in-depth consideration than most other categories of nonimmigrant visas. Therefore, those categories of nonimmigrant visas have higher unit costs. The MRV processing fee is paid by all visa applicants, worldwide, with certain limited exceptions, for example, those pertaining to government officials. It must be paid in advance, whether or not the visa is granted. The MRV processing fee is non-refundable and not transferable to another applicant.

The visa application fee must be paid before the visa interview at the U.S. Embassy.

The visa application fee is charged as following:

US$ 160 for the following categories:

• B1, business
• B2, tourism
• C, transit
• D, crew
• F, academic student
• J, exchange
• I, representatives of the means of communications
• M, vocational student

US$190 for the following categories:

• H, for trainees and temporary work
• L, for transfers within a company
• O, for foreign nationals with extraordinary skills 
• P, for athletes, artists and other entertainment professionals
• Q, for international cultural exchange programs 
• R, for religious professionals

US$240 for the following category:

• K, visa for the fiancés of US citizens

The person making the request must know exactly what type of visa to request as there will be no reimbursement.

Besides the visa application fee, certain types of visas may require payment of a reciprocity fee. The reciprocal issuance fee is an additional charge paid by visa applicants from certain countries in certain categories and is based on similar fees U.S. citizens are charged for visas to visit those countries.
