Background
Approximately 30 percent of the land in the United States is under the jurisdiction of the Federal Government. More than 490,000 miles of roads are critical to the administration of Federal lands and Indian lands. These roads also support the economic vitality of adjacent communities and regions. Within the 490,000 miles of roads, approximately 160,000 miles are public roads that provide access to and within Federal and Indian lands. The public roads connect to the remaining 330,000 miles of administrative roads, which are under the jurisdiction of Federal Land Management Agencies (FLMAs) — National Park Service, U.S. Forest Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Bureau of Indian Affairs, Bureau of Land Management, Department of Defense, Surface Deployment and Distribution Command, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Navy, Tennessee Valley Authority, and the Bureau of Reclamation. These Agencies are primary customers of Federal Lands Highway.
