USAID has funded a variety of education projects in South Africa for over 25 years.  Current programming directly supports the South African Government’s focus on improving the quality of education as outlined in the Department of Basic Education’s Action Plan to 2014: Towards the Realization of Schooling 2025.  Ongoing USAID projects focus on strengthening the effectiveness of teachers and school management. This builds on a wide range of projects implemented in partnership with the South African Government since 1994 across the spectrum of primary, further, higher and adult education.   Previous projects have included the development of policies and systems and enhanced capacity in the areas of curriculum, school governance, school-funding norms, quality assurance, and HIV/AIDS prevention and mitigation. Prior to 1994 USAID unilaterally funded tertiary scholarships and the work of NGO’s preparing for the transition to democracy.
