Since its establishment in July 2006, the Institute for Genomics & Systems Biology (IGSB) has been rapidly growing through the active recruitment of faculty and staff.  IGSB will house 9 to 10 core faculty members in genomics and systems biology at the University of Chicago and several scientists at Argonne National Laboratory. The Institute is also recruiting junior scientists and technical staff to fulfill IGSB mission goals.

Applications and Database Programmer

Seeking a qualified intermediate/senior level Programmer to support the University of Chicago’s Institute for Genomics & Systems Biology. Candidate would be responsible for supporting existing research projects such as the 1000 Cancer Genomes Project and the Encyclopedia of DNA Elements (ENCODE) Consortium by updating/customizing software for current use. In addition the programmer would work directly with Institute faculty, staff and graduate students to develop, implement and document new software solutions for genomic analysis and database management. Applicant is expected to prioritize and manage workload to meet critical project milestones and deadlines and maintain the ability to work in a collaborative team environment while working independently. Grant and Contract Administrator

Under general supervision, coordinates pre-award and/or post-award activities relating to grant and contract proposals/funding within a department or unit.

Pre Award:
Works directly with the faculty and research staff to seek new avenues for funding and new grant opportunities. Ensures that notices of relevant new funding opportunities for research programs are brought to the attention of the faculty. Gathers needed documentation and manages the execution of Subawards, Sponsored Consulting Agreements, and Subaward Amendments. Works with a broad array of sponsors, interpreting regulations and guidelines of multiple programs funding with broad and complex guidelines for spending. Ensures all applications meet agency and University guidelines. Works directly with the PI to develop proposal budgets, in accordance with the needs of the research plan and Agency and Institutional Requirements. Responsible for timely submission of application. Coordinates Active grant management, including submission of progress reports, non-competing applications, renewal/continual amendments, ensuring timely submission of technical reports, just-in-time submissions, no-cost extensions, and Agency required rebudgeting. Works closely with Post Award individuals (if separate) to transition grant administration upon award, including updating proposed budget to match Notice of Grant Award. Responsible for all data entry and preparation of grant reports and trend analysis. Interacts with University Research Administration, Faculty, Department Post-Award Staff, Pre/Post Award staff in other departments, Section Administrators.

Post Award:
Handle post award activity including account creation, regulatory and compliance monitoring, salary allocations and effort reporting, grant projections, cost allocations, cost center charges, equipment inventory, invoice preparation, grant closing process and account closing. Prepares detail expense budgets based on awarded funds from the agency. Allocates, authorizes, monitors, and controls expenses (oversees, if section administrators in department). Maintains accounts including oversight, reconciliation, and error correction. Submits cost transfers/ late cost transfers, as necessary. Performs financial forecasting. Coordinates submission of closing memos to ensure timely submission of FSR. Understands regulations and guidelines related to various awarding agencies. Prepares summaries of grants and effort allocations for Principal Investigators. Meets regularly with Principal Investigators regarding grant portfolio and expense allocation. Responds to Principal Investigators questions. Coordinates with other departments/ units/ divisions regarding multi investigator grants. Communicates status of faculty accounts to supervisor and other appropriate parties on a regular basis. May also oversee analysis and oversight of Principal Investigators gifts and renewal accounts. Serves as department contact for annual audits and agency site visits. Interacts with University Research Administration, Faculty, Department Pre-Award Staff, Department Human Resources, Pre/Post Award staff in other departments and Financial Services Office personnel. May supervise grant and contract coordinators or other staff members about the Unit.

HGAC Lab Manager

Principal contribution is providing leadership in applying principles and knowledge relevant to research projects. Performs senior-level lab and/or research-related duties and tasks. Performs lead role in research projects. Assists with project design. Oversees implementation of project, including planning new procedures, adapting existing procedures to the needs of the project, and making significant contributions to methodology. Oversees data collection, evaluation and analysis. Designs and manages databases. Writes reports, articles and manuscripts. Presents research findings at meetings and conferences, as well as to funding agencies. Conducts literature reviews. Trains and oversees the work of research support personnel. May manage other administrative aspects of the research project, including supervising research support personnel, tracking project expenditures, participating in funding negotiations, and assisting with grant and manuscript preparation. Responsibilities may include the following laboratory duties: independently performing complex technical duties; recognizing abnormal results and varying conditions or procedures to correct problems; monitoring and troubleshooting equipment; overseeing the ordering of supplies and maintenance of laboratory inventory; and ensuring laboratory compliance with all safety requirements. Postdoctoral Position in regulatory genomics at University of Chicago

A position is available for a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher in the group of Barbara Stranger at The University of Chicago, in the Section of Genetic Medicine, and the Institute of Genomics and Systems Biology. The researcher will be involved in analysis of a variety of types of human genomics data, including DNA-Seq, RNA-Seq, SNPs, DNA methylation, etc.

Research Professional

Serve as part of the Laboratory for Advanced Computing at the University of Chicago, which focuses on data intensive computing, bioinformatics, cloud computing, and related research areas and is developing a national scale infrastructure for data intensive computing, such as the Open Science Data Cloud, and algorithms and applications that can leverage this infrastructure. The position involves independent research, writing papers, technical reports, and grants. Works with end users to better understand the problems and requirements as well as participating in larger projects as part of a research team. The specifics of the role vary according to the project, with projects ranging from the development of software to the development of algorithms. The Research Professional will also disseminate the results of their work to others, including sharing results of research with colleagues through presentations or discussions at team meetings, preparing posters and presentations, delivering these at national and international scientific conferences, and writing original papers for publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals. Research Technologist

Principal contribution is providing routine or standardized laboratory or administrative duties and collecting routine data in support of research projects under direct supervision. System and Network Administrator

System and Network Administrator: Responsible for effective provisioning, installation/configuration, operation, and maintenance of systems hardware and software and related network infrastructure. Participates in maintenance and technical development to enable continuing innovation within the infrastructure. Ensures that system hardware, operating systems, software systems, and related procedures adhere to organizational values, enabling staff, research partners, biologists, and other end-users.

Performs daily system monitoring, verifies the integrity and availability of hardware, server resources, systems, and key processes; reviews system and application logs, and verifies completion of scheduled jobs such as backups.

Responsibilities include technical issues related to both hardware and the network infrastructure. These activities include the defining the needs, benefits, and technical strategies that will benefit the lab; enhancing research and development within the project life-cycle; performing technical analysis and design; and supporting the of operations staff in executing, testing, and rolling out project-specific solutions.
