Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory plans its investment in science, technology, and engineering (ST&E) to optimize mission impact while enhancing the workforce and core capabilities needed to meet future challenges. The strategy is defined in a series of documents that looks at both short- and long-term objectives for the ST&E enterprise and detail the specific steps needed to move toward those objectives. The strategy is reviewed annually and is updated to account for accomplishments as well as any evolution of the national security mission or related priorities.
This strategic planning process has resulted in the identification of Laboratory core competencies and focus areas requiring targeted investment. For instance, areas of particular focus lately include additive manufacturing, "big data," and biotechnology. Actual projects are funded as part of the institutional investment portfolio.
