In March of 2003, the Iraq War, or the War in Iraq (also referred to as the Occupation of Iraq, the Second Gulf War, or Operation Iraqi Freedom by the United States military) began under the U.S. government and administration of President George W. Bush and the British Minister Tony Blair. It was the longest military conflict to involve the United States other than the Vietnam War. On October 21, 2011, President Obama announced that all U.S. troops and trainers would leave Iraq by the end of the year, bringing the U.S. mission in Iraq to an end. On December 15, 2011, after nearly nine years, approximately 4,500 American fatalities and $1 trillion spent, U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta officially declared the Iraq War over, at a flag lowering ceremony in Baghdad. In commemoration of the men and women who served in Iraq, the U.S. Government Printing Office presents this collection of publications that highlight the history, operations and lessons learned from the start of the War in Iraq through counterinsurgency and reconstruction until the final end. When It Mattered Most: Remembering Our Fallen Medical Personnel in Iraq and Afghanistan (Hardcover) Publisher: Defense Dept. Today's military medical personnel in Iraq, Afghanistan, and around the world are upholding that long, proud tradition of caring and sacrifice for their fellow comrades in arms, risking and even losing their own lives. When It Mattered Most is their story. Includes a biography, portrait and family photos for each soldier listed. Tip of the Spear: U.S. Army Small Unit Action in Iraq, 2004-2007 Publisher: Defense Dept., Army, Center of Military History Description: In Iraq, American soldiers and their Coalition partners had merely traded one fairly weak and generally conventional opponent for a much more durable, diverse, and determined foe relying on the tactics of the guerilla and the terrorist. Tip of the Spear focuses on that second and longer campaign of the war in Iraq, but it is not a narrative of the overall course of the conflict.
