In 2002, NIGMS and the National Science Foundation (NSF) began supporting this program to address the pressing need to bring mathematics into the core of biological research and to broaden the use of innovative mathematics in understanding life processes. The program is designed to encourage new collaborations at this interface, as well as to support existing ones.
Each year, NSF and NIGMS together make between 15 to 20 awards totaling about $5 million. The awards range from $100,000 to $400,000 (total costs) per year for a duration of 3 to 5 years. Since the program’s start, NIGMS has funded more than 100 projects that tackle important research questions within the Institute’s mission.
Applications, which are reviewed by a joint NSF/NIGMS panel, are accepted once a year. The 2012 deadline was September 17. For details about that solicitation, see NSF Program Solicitation 12-561
