WHAT IS FAMILY MALTREATMENT?
Family maltreatment is a pattern of emotional, verbal, physical, and or sexual abuse of a spouse or child with the intent to intimidate, coerce, control, or harm a family member. It also means demeaning a spouse or child through repeated insults or other negative remarks, or depriving or neglecting basic needs. It can mean undermining a family member's confidence and self-worth or instilling fear and compliance. Anyone can commit family violence-it crosses all ranks. Substance abuse, stressors at work or home, and personal daily life issues can contribute to this problem. Many experts agree that especially in spouse abuse, violence is often linked to issues of power and control.

BREAKING THE CYCLE-WHAT CAN YOU DO?
In some families, violence can become a cycle that reoccurs over time in each generation. The pattern does not have to continue. Family Advocacy program counseling services can help. But the first goal of Family Advocacy is prevention to equip you with the skills to strengthen family relationships and avoid family violence. Showing respect for yourself and others is an important step toward a successful Air Force and a healthy family.

MAFB Chaplain: 723-2456 (7:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.)
For after-duty hours or during the weekend call Command Post at 723-3101 and ask for the duty Chaplain.

The Air Force Chaplain Corps provides spiritual care and the opportunity for Airmen, their families, and other authorized personnel to exercise their constitutional right to the free exercise of religion. This is accomplished through religious observances, providing pastoral care, and advising leadership on spiritual, ethical, moral, morale, core values, and religious accommodation issues.

Chaplain Corps personnel conduct needs assessment based upon the commander's mission requirements in order to plan and execute religious programs. Chaplain Service members remain responsible for pursuing alternative means for accommodation.

The privilege of total confidentiality in communications with a chaplain is an essential component of the chaplain's ministry. Privileged communication is protected communication.
