Demonstrations near Sports City, Amman (September 17, 2012)

September 17, 2012

In response to last week’s events in the region, about 150 members of an opposition group are demonstrating Monday evening near King Hussein Sports City in north Amman, and more are joining the group.  Police are on scene, and no violence is reported at this time.

U.S. citizens should avoid areas where demonstrations are ongoing.  Spontaneous and/or planned demonstrations occur in Jordan from time to time in response to world events or local developments.  We remind U.S. citizens that protests intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possibly escalate into violence. As always, please be aware of your surroundings and monitor local media.

The Embassy advises U.S. citizens to maintain valid travel documents and enroll with the Department of State through the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program.  By enrolling, U.S. citizens make it easier for the Embassy to contact them in case of emergency.

Weekend Demonstrations in Jordan

September 20, 2012

Subject:  Possible Weekend Demonstrations in Jordan

U.S. Embassy Amman has learned of several possible demonstrations that may occur this week throughout Jordan, including several in Amman.

Planned Demonstration at Embassy Today, 20 September: The Islamic Action Front has called for a demonstration in front of the U.S. Embassy in Abdoun today at 1600 hours.  However, local security services do not believe that a protest will materialize given the lack of publicity through conventional media outlets.  Nevertheless, as a precautionary measure, the Embassy will have extra security around the compound.

Unconfirmed Demonstration Called for Tomorrow At U.S. Embassy: The Embassy has received a report that a demonstration may take place at Al-Kurdi Mosque (site of last week’s protest), approximately one half-mile from the U.S. Embassy on Friday, September 21, following noon prayers.  The police have not confirmed this event, but the Gendarmerie will deploy extra officers at the Embassy in the event people move from the mosque to the Embassy compound.

Additional Demonstrations on Friday: Protests are planned for downtown Amman (near the Al-Husseini mosque), as well as in Aqaba and several other major cities in Jordan following noon prayers on Friday, September 21.

French Magazine Cartoons – Renewed Need for Vigilance: On September 19, a French magazine published cartoons satirizing the Prophet Mohammed.  As a result, the French Embassy in Amman has requested additional security for its official facilities.  U.S. citizens should exercise caution around all facilities associated with the Government of France, including its Embassy, the French School, and cultural centers.
