Thailand now ranks 15th among the countries that send university students to the United States, according to the Open Doors 2011 report.  The number of Thai students enrolled in U.S. institutions of higher education in 2010/11 was 8,236, a slight 3 percent decrease compared to the previous year. 

The total number of international students at colleges and universities in the United States increased by 5 percent to 723,277 during the 2010/11 academic year, a record high number. 

The 8,236 Thai students studying in the United States are enrolled in over 616 different universities.  The Academy of Art University, San Francisco, California, with 255 (3%) has the largest number of Thai students of any university in the U.S.

California is by far the most popular state with Thai students, attracting 1,482 (18%).  States following in order of popularity with Thais are:  Texas (517 or 6%); New York (507 or 6%); Massachusetts (500 or 6%); and Illinois (404 or 5%).        

Fifty-two percent of all Thais are studying at the graduate level.  Thirty percent are enrolled in undergraduate programs.  Eight percent are listed as non-degree programs, while ten percent are on Optional Practical Training (OPT).
