The U.S. Embassy Dar es Salaam would like to inform Americans that a passenger ferry has capsized off the coast of Zanzibar near Chumbe island. The "Stargate" ferry, operated by Seagull, had at least 200 passengers on board. Currently the Tanzanian police force, another passenger ferry, and private landing crafts are helping in the rescue effort. The cause of the accident is unknown but bystanders report unusually high waves and rough weather conditions.

At this time we are unaware whether there were any American passengers on board. We request American citizens who have additional information about other Americans on board to contact the the Consular Section of U.S. Embassy Dar es Salaam at 255-22-229-4000.

U.S. citizens traveling specifically to Tanzania should also regularly monitor the U.S. Embassy Dar es Salaam's website. The U.S. Embassy Dar es Salaam encourages U.S. citizens to review the Department of State’s "A Safe Trip Abroad", which includes valuable security information for those both living and traveling abroad.

U.S. citizens who travel to or reside in Tanzania are strongly advised to register through the State Department's travel registration website. U.S. citizens without internet access may register directly with the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate. By registering, U.S. citizens make it easier for the Embassy or Consulate to contact them in case of emergency.

In the event of an emergency, contact local authorities and the Consular Section of U.S. Embassy Dar es Salaam at 255-22-229-4000.
