National History Day Contest

The National History Day contest provides an annual theme for students to research, analyze, and create various projects on their interpretations.
Students may participate in the Junior Division (grades 6-8) or Senior Division (grades 9-12). There are four types of contest entries: documentary, exhibit, paper (for individual students only), and performance.  The National History Day web site has more information on the categories and rules that apply.   http://www.nhd.org/Contest.htm

 

Space Camp Scholarship

The Military Child Education Coalition has created a Space Camp scholarship for students enrolled in grades 6-9 who are children of an active duty military parent.  The Bernard Curtis Brown II Space Camp scholarship covers full tuition, meals, lodging, program materials, and transportation from student’s home base to Space Camp.

Space Camp is a five-day program offered in Huntsville, Alabama, that provides a unique, hands-on approach to learning science outside the classroom. For more information about Space Camp, visit their website at www.spacecamp.com.

Japan's National Spelling Bee

Students who attend DoDEA schools in either mainland Japan or Okinawa are invited to compete in Japan's National Spelling Bee. The best speller will win an all-expense paid trip for them and their chaperone to attend the Scripps National Spelling Bee in the United States. Home school students are welcome to join in the competition as well.

Eligibility:
1) Speller cannot have passed the 8th grade before February 1st
2) Speller must not have reached his/her 15th birthday on or before August 31st

 

American Legion Boys State Program

DoDEA overseas male students (rising seniors) are now eligible to apply for American Legion Boys Nation Programs.  American Legion Boys Nation is among the most respected and selective educational programs of government instruction for high school students. It is a participatory program where each participant becomes a part of the operation of his local, county and state government.

The applicant must be a male who has successfully completed his junior year of high school and has at least one more semester of high school remaining. Applicants must have exhibited outstanding qualities of leadership, character, scholarship, loyalty and service to their schools and community to be considered.
Schools are encouraged to make parents and students aware of this summer opportunity and provide them with contact information.  General program information and a listing of state directors are available at your school administration office.  Parents and students should contact their state's director regarding eligibility requirements, the application process and cost of participation.  For more information, please visit the American Legion Boys Nation web site.

 

Culinary Arts: ProStart Final Examinations

DoDEA high school students enrolled in Culinary Arts I (PTF401 ) or Culinary Arts II ( PTF402) have the opportunity to take the ProStart Year 1 or Year 2 certification exam.  Students who pass both exams and complete the necessary 400 hours of work experience receive the industry-recognized Certificate of Achievement and may apply for scholarships offered by the National Restaurant Association Education Foundation (NRAEF).  For more information, visit your school administration office.

 

Lodging Management - Preparation for LMP Final Examinations

DoDEA high school students enrolled in Lodging II (PTT402 ) or Lodging IV ( PTT404) have the opportunity to take the Lodging Management Program (LMP) Year 1 or Year 2 certification exam.

Students who pass both exams and complete the necessary 160 hours of work experience receive the professional designation of Certified Rooms Division Specialist (CRDS) which acknowledges competencies in four areas of lodging management: Front Office/Front Desk, Food and Beverage, Marketing and Sales, and Rooms Division.  Please visit your school administration office for more information.

 

President's Education Awards

DoDEA will again be participating in the President’s Education Awards Program this year.  DoDEA students are eligible for one of two honors: the President’s Award for Educational Excellence or the President’s Award for Educational Achievement.  For each award, students receive certificates signed by the President, the U.S. Secretary of Education, and the principal.  To be eligible for the President's Award for Educational Excellence, students at each award level (elementary, middle, or high school) must meet minimum requirements.  Please visit your school administration office for more details.

 

Junior Duck Stamp Program

DoDEA announces participation in the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Federal Junior Duck Stamp Program.  This dynamic educational program is designed to teach wetlands and waterfowl conservation to students in kindergarten through high school.  It engages students in both visual art and science.

Students are asked to participate in the activities in the Junior Duck Stamp educational program and then create drawings or paintings to submit for the Junior Duck Stamp Art Contest.  DoDEA will submit one "best of show" entry for the national competition.  At the national level, students with the top three art entries and the top three conservation messages receive cash awards.  Each year the winning entry from the national contest is made into the Junior Duck Stamp, which is sold for $5.00 by the U.S. Postal Service and the Amplex Corporation.  Links to the brochures regarding contest rules, past winning entries, curriculum guides, and other useful information are located on the web site: http://www.fws.gov/juniorduck/

 

MathCounts

Research Science Institute (RSI)

Each summer, 80 of the world's most accomplished high school students gather at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) for the Research Science Institute (RSI). RSI is the first cost-free to students, summer science & engineering program to combine on-campus course work in scientific theory with off-campus work in science and technology research.
