Consulate Reinforces Cultural Ties with Book Donation

Matamoros, Tamaulipas, July 26, 2012 – The U.S. Consulate in Matamoros celebrated its long-standing commitment to strengthen cultural ties between the U.S. and Mexico with a donation of over 1,000 books from the Penguin Classics series to the Prof. Juan B. Tijerina Municipal Library in Matamoros. The donation, which contains classics from writers as varied as Cervantes and Henry David Thoreau, will significantly increase the library’s English-language section. Consul General Michael Barkin, joined by library director Aristoteles Cerda Muñoz and Matamoros City Administrator Israel de Leon, among other distinguished guests, celebrated not only the donation, but also the 100th anniversary of the death of the library’s namesake, Juan B. Tijerina.  Consul General Barkin hopes this donation will help Library Director Aristoteles Cerda Muñoz in his efforts to make the library “a brilliant example for all of Tamaulipas and a place where people can come to expand their minds and enrich their world.”
