Denver, Colorado

Denver is located in north-central Colorado at the confluence of the High Plains and the Rocky Mountains at an elevation of 5,280 feet. It is the capital and largest city in Colorado with a population of almost 600,000 and a metro population of over 2,500,000. Founded on the South Platte River in 1858 as a mining town during one of the gold rushes, today Denver is one of the larger metro areas in the country and a major crossroads and hub between the Midwest and the West. The city and surrounding area is a center for business, state and federal government, recreation, tourism, and conventions; it is home to many large corporations, museums, the performing arts, all major league sports, as well as a very extensive park and trail system. OSM’s Western Region Office is situated in downtown Denver.

Educational opportunities are many, and include the University of Denver, the Colorado School of Mines in adjacent Golden, and the University of Colorado in nearby Boulder. Colorado State University in Ft. Collins and the Air Force Academy near Colorado Springs are slightly farther away.

Just a few of the many area features are the Denver Mint, Denver Zoo, Union Station, Red Rocks Park, Rocky Mountain National Park, numerous historical sites, national forests, and state parks. To the immediate west is the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains with several 14,000 feet peaks visible from the city.

Denver has a semi-arid climate with about 16 inches of annual precipitation, 24 inches of snowfall, low to moderate humidity, and plentiful sunshine. Precipitation is greatest in the spring and summer. In summer, high temperatures average the upper 80’s while low temperatures average the upper 50’s. In winter, high temperatures average the middle 40’s while low temperatures average the middle teens.
