GHI Country Strategy
The Government of Bangladesh’s vision is “to see the people healthier, happier, and economically productive to make Bangladesh a middle-income country by 2021” (Vision 2021). The goal of the next 5-year Population, Health, and Nutrition Sector Strategic Program, covering 2011–2016, is to ensure quality and equitable health care for the citizens of Bangladesh.

The overarching Global Health Initiative (GHI) country goals in Bangladesh are to stabilize population and improve health and nutrition by increasing the equitable use of evidence-based, high-impact population health and nutrition services. Three areas of focus have been identified to guide U.S. investments in Bangladesh:

  1. Revitalizing nationwide family planning to increase the use of effective family planning and reproductive health services
  2. Increasing the use of integrated population, health, and nutrition services
  3. Strengthening health systems governance at the national and local levels

The Bangladesh national strategy includes explicit goals to address GHI health targets, including preventing unintended pregnancies; saving mothers’ lives by increasing the number of women who use a skilled birth attendant; encouraging public, private, and nongovernmental organization partners to integrate health services; and promoting adherence to one health plan by national and local health systems.

GHI Principles in Action – Increase Impact through Strategic Coordination and Integration
Under the leadership of the Ambassador, the Bangladesh GHI Country Team has been an example of effective coordination in planning and implementation; it is beginning to show the results of these endeavors as progress toward the Millennium Development Goals continues to accelerate. The GHI Country Strategy focuses on improving health services while also building health systems. These objectives fold seamlessly into both U.S. and Bangladeshi goals in the health sector and represent the effective leveraging of each agency’s strengths. Because Bangladesh has been selected not only as a vanguard for GHI, but also for other interagency initiatives and cross-cutting endeavors, the GHI Country Team coordinates both interagency and across sectors to further health-related goals (e.g., U.S. Feed the Future initiative, global climate change, and global engagement). The GHI Country Team and GHI Country Strategy have been the critical vehicles to both define where leveraging should occur across initiatives and to manage the successful implementation of such plans.
