INTRODUCTION

law clerks at U.S. Capitol

Thank you for your interest in the Department of the Navy's Office of the General Counsel (OGC). As you read further, you'll learn about what makes the Navy legal practice different. You’ll learn about the various organizations forming OGC, as well as the clients you would serve as an OGC attorney. You'll also learn about the OGC attorneys you'd be working with, and what your career as a Department of the Navy (DON) attorney might be like with regard to the practice, clients, and locations.

OGC attorneys are civilian employees of the DON. We are distinct from the uniformed attorneys who belong to the Navy 's Judge Advocate General's Corps (JAG) and Marine Corps Judge Advocates. The areas of OGC practice are also different from the JAG.

This narrative was prepared by attorneys now practicing in Navy OGC and not by an outside writer. We've drawn from our own experiences to describe what you may expect.

You'll have an immediate opportunity to directly serve clients assigned to you on significant matters.

You'll be trained in the fields you practice.

You'll have a clear opportunity to advance so that your skills increase.

You'll enjoy a sense of satisfaction from meaningful service.

Read on to find out how you could become part of the proud history and tradition of OGC civilian attorneys.
