We are excited to announce that we be will hosting a twice weekly 30 minute webinar series providing a more in-depth look at each of the datasets.
Join us on Thursday, February 14, 2013 at 3 pm Eastern / 1 pm Mountain for the first in this series: Gap Analysis Program (GAP) datasets – what questions can they answer and how you can access the data.
Endangered species get much attention from the news media and government agencies these days. But…how well are we protecting common plants and animals that are not considered endangered species? Gap Analysis is the science of answering this broad question. GAP datasets address specific issues such as:
- Where are the biodiversity conservation lands and who manages them?
- How much of a specific plant community or animal species’ habitat is held by each type of management organization?
- How much of a species’ habitat is on protected lands?
- Which areas host the most species?
Users can access GAP data via Web Services, data viewers, or data download:
- Land Cover: Information on the vegetation of the United States and enables data users to make conservation or land use planning decisions. Data | Viewer
- Protected Areas: Data system and program to evaluate biodiversity and the effectiveness of land management conservation programs on protecting species through modeling and mapping. Data | Viewer
- Species: Vertebrate range maps and distribution models for the continental U.S., as well as Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and U.S. Virgin Islands. Data | Viewer
