Daniel Callahan began his assignment as the Consul for Political and Economic Affairs at the U.S. Consulate in Fukuoka in August 2012. Previously, he worked as the Political and Economic Officer in Melbourne, Australia (2010-2012) and in the Consular Section of the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City (2008-2009).  Prior to joining the U.S. Foreign Service, he worked for seven years in Washington, DC for the U.S. State Department in the area of chemical weapons arms control and nonproliferation.

In the private sector, Dan worked as a project specialist for two years at Toyota Motor Manufacturing North America in Los Angeles, California and Cincinnati, Ohio (1996-1998).  Before that, he lived in Japan for three years, first as an Assistant English Teacher (AET) in the JET Program in Samani-cho, Hokkaido (1992-1994), and then as a student at the Inter-University Center for Japanese Language Studies in Yokohama (1994-1995).

Dan received his B.A. in international political economy from the University of California, Berkeley in 1992, with a focus on Northeast Asia, including a year of study in Hong Kong.  He also received a Masters in Foreign Service from Georgetown University in 2000, with a focus on national security.

Dan is joined in Fukuoka by his wife and their daughter.
