Pilot's Guide to Runway Safety

Runway incursions are not new.  The specific study of incursion causes and ways to prevent them have become a major focus of the FAA in recent years.

This program will review the signs, markings, and lighting that you will find at the airport and cover planning for safe ground operations at various types of airfields.  Safe pilot habits will be interspersed throughout the program and new technology to keep you safe will also be included.
 
This program helps the pilot review and consider the following: 

• Know what constitutes runway incursions and how to minimize such.
• How communications, airport knowledge, and cockpit procedures for maintaining orientation will help minimize runway incursions.
• Review all the airport markings. See the current AIM for a good overview.
• Know the procedures for how to taxi around a towered airport.
• Especially review runway markings, like colors and lights, thresholds, and closed runways.
• Know the importance of copying and reading back clearances.
• The importance of making your airplane more visible to all by the proper use of lighting.
• Learn the proper method for communicating at a towered and a non-towered airport both when departing and arriving.
• Know which facility is responsible for your movements at the different phases of your on-the-ground operations.
• Understand the ins and outs of a land and hold short clearance.
