Diplomatic Visa

Diplomatic (“A” and “G”) visas are issued to certain individuals traveling to the United States on official business representing their government or an international organization designated under the International Organization Immunities Act.  The U.S. Embassy is guided by U.S. regulations when issuing this type of visa.

Holding a Diplomatic or Official passport does not automatically mean that one qualifies for a Diplomatic visa.  When using a Diplomatic or Official passport, for whatever purpose, applicants must obtain a Diplomatic Note from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to apply for a visa.  If the applicant intends to use a Diplomatic or Official passport for non-official purposes, please refer to the normal procedures for non-immigrant visas, including scheduling an interview three weeks in advance.

It is best to contact the Consular section to confirm that you qualify for an “A” or “G” visa if you are not certain.

Procedures for applying for an “A” or “G” visa:

  1. Obtain a Diplomatic Note from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs if carrying a Diplomatic or Service Passport.
  2. Obtain a letter from the government Ministry or International Organization in Mozambique that the applicant will be representing.
  3. Obtain an invitation letter for the meeting or event in which the applicant will participate in the United States.
  4. Fill out and print the on-line DS-160 application form.
  5. Bring all of the above information to the U.S. Embassy at least seven days before intended date of travel.  Delayed applications may result in a delay in travel.
The personal interview, application fee, and fingerprints are usually waived for Diplomatic visas.

Certain types of assignments with some international organizations require a cable/fax to be sent directly to the Consular section in order to process a visa.
