    Polar Science Weekend at the Pacific Science Center in Seattle, Wash., Feb. 28 - March 3, 2013, is four days of hands-on activities, live demonstrations and exhibits presented by scientists who work in some of the most remote and challenging places on Earth. Learn about ice sheets and sea ice, polar bears and penguins, scientific instruments and polar expeditions. Polar Science Weekend highlights NASA-funded work in the polar regions, and is supported by an Education and Public Outreach grant from NASA's Science Mission Directorate.

    2013 NASA Space Settlement Design Contest
    Design a space settlement! Space settlements are permanent communities in orbit, as opposed to being on the moon or other planets. Designing a space settlement involves physics, mathematics, space science, environmental science and many other disciplines. This contest is intended for students in grades 6-12, although younger students may enter. Individuals or teams from anywhere in the world may enter. Grade levels are judged separately, except for the grand prize. Submissions must be received by March 15, 2013.

    Sun-Earth Days 2013: Solar Max -- Storm Warning: Effects on the Solar System
    Sun-Earth Days comprise a series of programs and events that occur throughout the year, culminating with a celebration on or near the spring equinox. This year's theme, “Solar Max -- Storm Warning: Effects on the Solar System,” invites participants to explore the violent nature of our sun at the peak of solar activity.     Family Day -- Women in Aviation and Space

    Citizen Science: Asteroid Mappers
    NASA's Dawn Mission invites you to investigate and analyze high-resolution Dawn images of the giant asteroid Vesta, including craters and other features, from your own computer. The Dawn Mission's spacecraft has gathered intriguing data, including tens of thousands of images, more than the Dawn team has time to analyze in detail. That's where you come in. Register today to help the Dawn Science Team make sense of new elements on the surface of Vesta and learn more about this mysterious world.

    Curiosity Explorer Badge on Foursquare
    NASA and the mobile application Foursquare have teamed up to help the public unlock its scientific curiosity with a new rover-themed Curiosity Explorer badge. Users of the Foursquare social media platform can earn the badge by following NASA and checking in at a NASA visitor center or venue categorized as a science museum or planetarium. Foursquare users also can keep up with Curiosity as the rover checks in at key locations and posts photos and tips, all while exploring the Red Planet.

    Odyssey of the Mind -- It's How You Look at It
    NASA is sponsoring the Odyssey of the Mind Long-Term Problem -- It's How You Look at It. To solve this problem, teams create and present an original humorous performance that includes two characters that act naturally -- to them -- but odd to those around them. The performance must include a meter that indicates the degree of odd/normal behavior and a creative scene change. Visit the site for more information and dates for regional competitions.

    New Horizons Kids Club
    New Horizons wasn't the only voyage launched on Janurary 19, 2006. The New Horizons team welcomes five new "Pluto Pals." The five students were born on the same day the spacecraft started on its historic journey the outer solar system.

    Rock Around the World
    Mars scientists are asking students from around the world to help them understand the red planet. Send in a rock collected by you or your classroom from your region of the world, and we will use a special tool like the one on the rover to tell you what it's made of. Then everyone can compare their rocks to the ones found on Mars.

    NASA's Sun-Earth Days program wants to see your best anime artwork. SolarMAX is the official superhero mascot for Sun-Earth Days. But keeping an eye on space weather is a big job for just one superhero. The Sun-Earth Days team is looking for students ages 13 and older to create and submit a new and original anime-style character to help SolarMAX. The character must have a visible space weather related super power. Entries must be submitted online by March 20, 2013.

    NASA's Digital Learning Network Special Event: Chat With a Mission Control Flight Officer
    NASA's Digital Learning Network is excited to offer a unique opportunity to ask questions of an actual mission control flight officer at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston. Students will witness the inner workings of the International Space Station’s mission control. Each event will begin with a 30-minute introduction by a DLN education specialist, followed by a question and answer session with mission control representatives. This special event will take place each Thursday. Visit the site to register your classroom for an upcoming event.

    Free Lecture -- Robots and Humans Unite
    The universe is far older and vaster than anyone imagined a century ago. To help scientists map the structure and evolution of the universe, a special instrument called a Hectospec was needed. A Hectospec uses the precision technology of optical fibers placed by delicate but very fast robots. On March 2, 2013, Senior Physicist Dan Fabricant will discuss how the Hectospec was developed, how it works and how it is used by astronomers for scientific discovery. The lecture begins at 5:15 p.m. at the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C. Stay after the lecture to visit the observatory, weather permitting.

    Free Lecture -- Curiosity's Mission of Exploration at Gale Crater, Mars
    In August 2012, the Curiosity rover arrived on Mars in a daring feat of engineering. On March 12, 2013, John Grotzinger, chief scientist for the Mars Science Laboratory Mission, will share the latest images and scientific results from the Curiosity mission. Grotzinger will also discuss Gale Crater, the area where Curiosity is exploring. The lecture begins at 8 p.m. at the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C. Come early to see a free film and to meet the lecturer. The lecture will be webcast live.

    2013 NASA Glenn Research Center High School Internship Project
    The NASA Glenn Research Center High School Internship Project provides paid summer internship opportunities, eight weeks in duration, to students interested in careers in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and professional administration at the NASA Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio. Applicants must be U.S. citizens in grades 10-11 and live within a 50-mile radius of Glenn Research Center. Applications are due March 15, 2013.

    The Global Positioning System, or GPS, has become a ubiquitous, but often invisible, part of modern life.     2013 Thacher Environmental Research Contest
    The Institute for Global Environmental Strategies is accepting entries for the 2013 Thacher Environmental Research Contest. The contest is open to U.S. students in grades 9-12. Entries may be submitted by individuals or teams. Entries should demonstrate the best use of geospatial tools or data to study our home planet. Cash awards will be given to students in the top three places. Awards will also be given to the winning students' teachers. Entries must be postmarked by April 15, 2013.

    Free Lecture -- The Voyager Journey to the Edge of Interstellar Space

    RockOn 2013 University Rocket Science Workshop
    NASA's Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia is hosting the RockOn 2013 workshop on June 15-20, 2013, in partnership with the Colorado and Virginia Space Grant Consortia. U.S. university and community college faculty and students are invited to the weeklong workshop to learn how to build and launch a scientific experiment into space. Participants at the hands-on workshop will build an experiment that will be launched to an altitude of more than 70 miles. Workshop participants must be U.S. citizens.     Centennial Challenge: Nano-Satellite Launch Challenge
    NASA and the Space Florida Small Satellite Research Center in Cape Canaveral, Fla., are seeking teams to compete in a satellite launch technology demonstration competition with a $2-million prize purse. Teams will compete to launch satellites with a mass of at least 1 kilogram (2.2 pounds) into Earth orbit twice within the span of one week.
