Sandstorms and/or duststorms that are affecting the Korean peninsula occur most frequently in the spring season in the arid and semi-arid area of sand deserts from northern China and Mongolia. The very young, the elderly, those immunocompromised and people with chronic/severe respiratory or cardiac illness’ are considered high risk and should avoid/minimize all outdoor activity at dust levels above 400 ㎍/㎥ (parts per million per cubic meter of air), according to the 65th Medical Brigade.
Additionally, all others should not conduct outdoor physical training and cancel outdoor activities that require prolonged or heavy physical exertion. All outdoor activities should be prohibited when the hourly averaged dust concentration is expected to exceed 800 ㎍/㎥.
