Location: South-central Louisiana, Lower Mississippi Valley; Atchafalaya Basin; Years: 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011
The primary goal here is to accomplish long-term monitoring of the diverse anuran assemblage in this large bottomland hardwood area. Additional research questions centered on the effects of changes in hydrology will also be addressed.
Ambystomatid Salamander Monitoring at Kisatchie National Forest: Ambystoma opacum , Ambystoma maculatum , Ambystoma talpoideum , Ambystoma texanum (Marbled Salamander, Spotted Salamander, Mole Salamander, Small-mouthed Salamander)
Location: Kisatchie National Forest; Kisatchie District, Kisatchie Bayou Campground Area; Years: 2010, 2011
The goals of this study are to 1.) estimate the number of adults of each species using the pond, 2.) determine the reproductive effort of adults (number of egg masses), 3.) estimate the density of larvae and predators in the pond, and 4.) examine the yearly variability in phenology of breeding among species.
Potential impacts of salinity on anuran occupancy dynamics at Big Thicket National Preserve: Acris blanchardi , Lithobates clamitans , Hyla cinerea , Gastrophryne carolinensis , Lithobates catesbeianus , Incilius nebulifer , Lithobates sphenocephalus (Blanchard's Cricket Frog, Green Frog, Green Tree Frog, Eastern Narrow-mouthed Toad, American Bullfrog, Gulf Coast Toad, Southern Leopard Frog)
Location: Big Thicket National Preserve; Beaumont Unit, Big Thicket National Preserve; Years: 2010, 2011
The goal of this study is to monitor anuran occupancy using standard protocols while also recording salinities, as this area is below a salwater barrier on the Neches River and is susceptible to saltwater encroachment during tropical storm surges or periods of drought, which may impact anuran occupancy.
Mechanical disking to herbicide treatments in waterfowl managed ponds: The effect of management changes on amphibians: Pseudacris crucifer , Anaxyrus fowleri , Acris crepitans , Hyla cinerea , Gastrophryne carolinensis , Lithobates catesbeianus , Lithobates sphenocephalus (Spring Peeper, Fowler's Toad, Northern Cricket Frog, Green Tree Frog, Eastern Narrow-mouthed Toad, American Bullfrog, Southern Leopard Frog)
Location: Coldwater River National Wildlife Refuge; Various old catfish ponds on property; Years: 2009, 2010, 2011
The objective of this study is to assess the effects on amphibians of treating waterfowl managed ponds with herbicide. Previously, mechanical disking was used exclusively to control weeds in the ponds.
