The educational counseling process is central to the delivery of meaningful adult educational programs and services to Soldiers in our geographic area of responsibility. Army guidance counselors assist Soldiers to establish realistic long- and short-range educational goals, advise Soldiers on how to make plans toward the achievement of those goals, and assist, through counseling, on the advisement of the appropriate ACES programs and services to fulfill goals.

Post 9/11 GI BILL MGIB/VA benefits advising is available.

Counseling services are available at all Army education centers in Hawaii on a walk –in basis – first come, first served – during normal hours of operation.

Although Soldiers are the priority for ACES counselors, counseling services are also available to adult family members, Department of Army civilians, and other eligible personnel. Appointments are not necessary; however, it is handled on a space available basis.

Visit a counselor to discuss your professional and personal goals.

GT Improvement Courses

Education centers in Hawaii offer GT Improvement classes on a monthly basis to provide soldiers with the opportunity to improve their AFCT scores toward promotion, reclassification, re-enlistment, and qualifying for various service schools. Classes meet 9 a.m.-12 p.m., Monday-Friday, providing 60 hours of classroom instruction focusing on vocabulary building, basic mathematics, reading comprehension and test taking skills.

Soldiers interested in attending GT Improvement classes must see an ACES guidance counselor concerning class schedules, pre- and post- testing requirements, and enrollment procedures.

Accredited colleges and universities offer certificate and degree programs to Soldiers and adult family members via on-post classes, off-post attendance at a local institution, or through distance learning. Army tuition assistance (TA), up to 100 percent, is available to all eligible Soldiers with an annual ceiling of $4,500 and a semester hour cap of $250.

All Soldiers requesting TA must follow these steps to ensure their eligibility:

  • Visit www.goarmyed.com to obtain a username and password for access to the GoArmyEd portal.
  • Take the GoArmyEd training course which is available on the portal.
  • Research your educational goals in the GoArmyEd portal and select a college, degree level and plan. TA will be allocated only for those courses which apply to the degree plan.
  • Print out a Statement of Understanding (SOU) from the GoArmyEd portal, sign it, and obtain a signature from the unit commander.
  • Visit an Army guidance counselor for assistance in reviewing your educational goal and uploading the SOU into your e-file. The guidance counselor, once review actions have been taken, will activate your access to the TA function of the GoArmyEd portal.

Soldiers, as responsible adults, take responsibility for managing their GoArmyEd accounts and the use of TA. TA can be requested from any computer/anytime/anywhere having access to the Internet.

Other Soldier responsibilities:

  • Request TA on a course-by-course basis with guidance from the home college academic advisor.
  • Ensure the withdrawals are made via the GoArmyEd portal.  Grades of "F" and withdrawals due to personal reasons will activate automatic recoupment of TA funds.  Military reasons will void recoupment.
  • Ensure a new, signed SOU is submitted annually before the anniversary date.
  • Be knowledgeable on the use of the GoArmyEd portal (do the Soldier Quick Start Training tutorial and do the PReP assessment if contemplating online distance learning course)

College programs leading to certificates, associate, baccalaureate and graduate degrees are available on Army installations in Hawaii with schedules published on a quarterly basis by each institution and available at your local education center.
