Program Mission
The mission of the Neurology Service is to provide excellence in clinical medicine, basic and clinical neurological research, and teaching of Neurology at all levels of medical education.
Program Description
The Neurology Service of the Miami VA Healthcare System is directed by a Chief and an Associate Chief. The Neurology Service is staffed by two full-time and three part-time Attending Physicians, a nurse practitioner, seven Technicians, a Program Support Clerk, and a Secretary. All Neurologists at the Miami VAMC are board certified in Neurology and are faculty members of the University of Miami School of Medicine.
Patient Services
Highly specialized and comprehensive care of patients with neurological problems is available on the inpatient Neurology Service and the Neurology Outpatient Clinics. In particular, the Neurology Service has a busy inpatient consultation service to evaluate neurological problems in patients hospitalized on the medical, psychiatric, and surgical services. The Service takes care of all types of patients with neurological disease. Special expertise is available in the following areas: Stroke, Epilepsy, Sleep Disorders, Multiple Sclerosis, and Neurovirology. Advice from University of Miami Physicians who are VA consultants is available in the areas of Neuromuscular Diseases, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, and Movement Disorders. The Miami VA Healthcare System is a state certified Primary Stroke Center and part of the Epilepsy Center of Excellence, Southeastern Region.
Training
The Neurology Service is actively involved in both training of physicians and research. In affiliation with the University of Miami, training of Neurology Resident Physicians and fellow is provided.
Research
Most neurology service physicians have active basic and clinical biomedical research projects.
Clinical Laboratories
Two active clinical laboratories are staffed by VA physicians. The EEG (electroencephalography) Laboratory provides EEGs, EEG/video telemetry, intraoperative monitoring, and evoked potentials. The Sleep Laboratory provides complete facilities including beds and equipment for all-night sleep recordings to evaluate veterans with sleep disorders. The Sleep Clinic meets weekly to provide outpatient consultation.
