Pharmacy Residency Program

About the Pharmacy Service

The San Francisco VA Medical Center Pharmacy Service is a progressive department with 80 employees, including 56 pharmacists.  Computerized provider order entry is utilized in all settings, bar code recognition technology is in place for verification and documentation of medication administration, and the patient medical record is fully integrated and available online.  The Pharmacy Service has implemented automated technology for many of its dispensing activities. The Pharmacy Service has formal affiliation with UCSF and University of the Pacific Schools of Pharmacy. Clinical pharmacists provide services to a variety of inpatient areas.  Clinical services include medication reconciliation, discharge counseling, drug information, and pharmacokinetics. Clinical pharmacists provide disease management and other services to the Ambulatory Care Clinics.

The PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Programs

The Pharmacy Service offers two distinct PGY1 pharmacy residencies: PGY1 and PGY1 - Ambulatory Care.

The PGY1 Pharmacy Residency 

The PGY1 Pharmacy Residency offers a flexible program which provides concentrated clinical, teaching, and administrative experience with experienced, individualized preceptorship. Required rotations include Internal Medicine, Critical Care, Surgical specialty, and Ambulatory Care.  Electives include I.D., Anticoagulation, Toxicology, and Geriatrics.  Residents precept UCSF and UOP clerkship students.  Other responsibilities include code blue participation, DUE development and drug evaluations, and completion of a research project which is presented at the Western States Conference for Pharmacy Residents, Fellows and Preceptors.

The PGY1 Pharmacy Residency - Ambulatory Care Track 

The PGY1 Pharmacy Residency - Ambulatory Care Track provides training in ambulatory care clinical practice development.  The resident participates in Medical Practice, Anticoagulation, Infectious Disease, Hepatitis C, Mental Health, Home Based Primary Care, Diabetes Education and Medication Teaching Clinic.  Other clinics may be available.  The resident will manage clinics and precept other PGY1 pharmacy residents, UCSF and UOP pharmacy students.  Other responsibilities include code blue participation, DUE development and drug evaluations, and completion of a research project which is presented at the Western States Conference for Pharmacy Residents, Fellows and Preceptors.
