Pharmacy Residency Program

Overview and History

Pharmacy Service at the Cincinnati Veterans Affairs Medical Center offers four (4) positions for a one year ASHP accredited PGY1 Pharmacy Residency with a mandatory teaching certification offered in partnership with the University of Cincinnati James L. Winkle College of Pharmacy.Cincinnati Veterans Medical Center 

The Cincinnati VA Pharmacy Service has over a 20 year tradition of collaborative practice between our clinical pharmacists and physician colleagues with clinical pharmacy services in a variety of areas including acute care, critical care, primary care, mental health, women’s health, hematology/oncology, cardiology, neurology, substance dependence, and infectious diseases.

Our residency program was established in 1994 with accreditation in August 1995. The residency offers the required core rotations as well as many electives. Residents finish our program with the skills to establish strong clinical pharmacy practices and over 60% of our graduates have stayed within the VA Healthcare System. Click here for more information on VA Pharmacy Positions.

Program Goals

Our one-year postgraduate pharmacy resident training program is intended to provide its graduates with a variety of advanced practice stills including:

  • Functioning effectively as a pharmacist in multiple healthcare environments
  • Functioning effectively as a member of an interdisciplinary primary care team
  • Working under a collaborative practice agreement to provide direct patient care services including disease state management, patient education and wellness promotion
  • Developing leadership skills in all areas of pharmacy practice management including continuous quality improvement, medication use evaluation, medication reconciliation, drug information, staff development and formulary management
  • Developing and refining teaching, writing and speaking skills to ensure professionalism in providing patient/staff education and information
  • Developing the ability to manage one’s own practice
  • Becoming a self-directed learner who takes personal responsibility for attaining excellence in one’s ability to provide pharmaceutical care

Resident Benefits

The resident will be appointed as a pharmacy employee of the Cincinnati VAMC with the following benefits:

  • Eligibility for Licensure
  • Pharm. D. from an ACPE accredited College of Pharmacy

  • Three letters of recommendation to be submitted online via PhorCAS.
  • Please email the RPD three examples of your written work (do not include PowerPoint presentations please).  You should choose from the following:  any publications, newsletter articles, patient education materials you have written, or other documents that will clearly show your writing and composition skills.
