Location: Andersen Air Force Base (AFB), Guam is located on the north end of Guam, approximately 15 miles from the capital, Agana (or Ha-gan-ya). Andersen AFB is in the village of Yigo (pronounced "Jeego"). Guam is the most southern island in the Marianas Island chain. BRAC Status: Andersen AFB is jointly based with Naval Base Guam to form Joint Region Marians (JRM).

Cost of Living: Living in Guam is expensive. A hidden tax is included in the price of items and services.

Child Care: The CDC offers full daycare for children six weeks through kindergarten; part day enrichment for children three through 5 years old and hourly care for all ages on a space available basis. Fees and charges are based on total family income. Spaces at the CDC are limited and certain age groups may have a waiting list. Waiting periods vary from 2 weeks to a month depending on availability of slots.

Schools: Guam DDESS District has a student enrollment of 2,500. Students attend school in one of four (4) schools: Andersen Elementary (K-5); Andersen Middle School (6-8) at Andersen AFB; McCool Elementary/Middle School (K-8) at Apra Heights; and Guam High School (9-12) at Nimitz Hill. Standardized test scores for the Guam District are available through the DoDEA Data Center.

Youth Services: The Force Support Squadron's Youth Center has fantastic programs, after school and during the summer. They have organized dances, field trips, kayaking trips, swimming parties and various other activities to peak a teens' interest. There is a Teen and Child Pen Pal program where children can request a sponsor that is their same age to write in order to find out information about the base and school that will be attended. Housing: Andersen AFB has 1,225 housing units. In order to be assigned military family housing (MFH), you must have command sponsorship. The average wait time for on-base housing varies from month-to-month.

The Unaccompanied Personnel Housing (UPH) office is located in Bldg 25007, Saipan Hall, and may be reached at DSN 315-366-2725, or 671-366-2725. All unaccompanied members who are E4 and below will be assigned to dorm units. Unaccompanied members, E5 and above, are authorized to live off-base. Officers, E-7 and above may apply to living in out unaccompanied housing through the Housing Office. Andersen AFB has 60 unaccompanied housing units.

Private rentals off base include but are not limited to houses, condominiums, duplexes, and apartments.

Employment: There are continuing vacancies available on Andersen AFB, mostly federal or federal contract positions that are temporary, part-time, and full-time. While there are opportunities outside the base, unless special qualifications are required by the employer with commensurate compensation, most of the wages are at minimum level. Guam frequently experiences labor shortages. Much of the unemployment is driven by the cyclical nature of the hotel and visitor industry.

Medical Services: The Andersen Clinic is an outpatient clinic. Co-located with the Dental clinic, it has an emergency room and only minimal medical procedures can be addressed. Naval Hospital facilitates all emergencies and in patient care. Naval Hospital Guam is located in the village of Agana Heights. It is approximately 20 miles south of Andersen AFB.

School Age children and military spouses need a clean IPPD test (Tuberculosis Screening Test), especially if working in the beverage industry, medical community, or around children.
If you are bringing a firearm to Guam, you must register it with the Guam authorities within 30 days of arrival. You will be required to consent to a background check, obtain a firearm ID card, then register each firearm. Andersen Security Forces requires separate registration of any firearm you plan to store on base. Failing to properly register your firearms can lead to criminal penalties and refusal of movers to ship your firearms when you PCS from Guam.

Defense Service Network (DSN) Dialing Instructions

The DSN is the provider of long-distance communications service for the Department of Defense (DoD). Every installation has a special DSN number and the numbers vary by world-wide location. In order to place a call using DSN, the caller must be using a military phone on an installation. Cell phones cannot dial DSN numbers. When dialing a DSN number from a United States installation to another United States installation, it is unnecessary to dial the DSN 312 area code. When dialing a DSN number to/from overseas locations, the DSN area code must be included. The operator can be reached at commercial (719) 567-1110.
