Mimi Chakarova Speaks at Ambassador’s Forum on Investigative Reporting

Award-winning investigative journalist Mimi Chakarova spoke at a U.S. Ambassador’s Forum hosted by the United States Embassy on Monday, December 10, at the Ukrainian Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Kyiv. U.S. Ambassador John Tefft delivered opening remarks at the event and also presented awards for the second annual Investigative Journalism Competition of the Embassy of the United States of America and Ukrainska Pravda in a ceremony that immediately followed Ms. Chakarova’s presentation and discussion. A documentary photographer and filmmaker, Mimi Chakarova was named the winner of the 2011 Daniel Pearl Award for Investigative Journalism in October 2011 in Kyiv, for her film about human trafficking “The Price of Sex.” At the Ambassador’s Forum, she spoke about the making of the film, played short clips, and discussed how to cover invisible populations and the challenges of investigating corruption.

Ms. Chakarova also met with journalism students in Kyiv, Zaporizhzhya, Berdaynsk, and Mariupol during the week and talked about the importance and future of investigative journalism.
