About USAID

The American people, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), have provided economic and humanitarian assistance worldwide for nearly 50 years. With headquarters in Washington, DC, and field missions in Sub-Saharan Africa, Asia and the Near East, Latin America and the Caribbean, and Europe and Eurasia, USAID, as the U.S. government's Agency for International Development, has been implementing America's foreign economic and humanitarian assistance programs since 1961.

USAID works in close partnership with private U.S. based voluntary organizations, indigenous institutions, U.S. businesses, and other national and international agencies.

Since declaring independence following the collapse of the USSR in 1991, Moldova has made great progress toward becoming a strong, independent, and market-oriented democracy. USAID launched an assistance program in Moldova in 1992 to support this transition - establishing health and social safety net programs, fostering democratic processes, and helping to restructure and privatize key industries to jump-start economic growth.

In support of Moldova’s democratic and free-market reforms, USAID works to promote Economic Growth and to strengthen Democratic Governance.  Programs in these areas are designed to promote economic and political reforms that lay the groundwork for long-term stability. USAID’s projects are implemented in partnership with the Government of Moldova by international and local nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), U.S. businesses, and U.N. agencies.
