Cultural Programs

Throughout Latvia, the Public Affairs Office (PAO) organizes events along with partners to offer a glimpse into America's diverse culture. It also organizes events focused on promoting public awareness and community dialogue around various policy issues including human rights concerns.

Over the past years, some of the cultural programming highlights have included the Month of American Culture in 2010 and 2011, U.S. musicians performing at local music festivals, poetry readings, film programs, dance performances, sports clinics, and visual art exhibits. The Embassy has also supported local initiatives by bringing in subject matter experts from the U.S. to enhance the local dialogue and promote cultural exchange.

Looking ahead, we will be offering a diverse cultural program throughout 2012, including a very unusual theater performance, classic and contemporary dance, a social media identity logo contest, a stand-up improvisation comedy, independent film shows, mural painting project and many more. Please stay tuned with our new Cultural Calendar and social media!

American Center in Daugavpils

In 2005, the U.S. Embassy opened American Centers in Daugavpils. The center at the Latgale Central Library in Daugavpils opened May 23. This project represents an investment of $38,000, and months of close cooperation between the library staff and the U.S. Embassy's Information Resource Center.

The mission of the center is to provide accurate and up-to-date information about political, economic, cultural, educational, and social life in the United States. "Info USA" center is a small, American-style library created to help increase mutual understanding between Latvia and the United States, to accurately tell the story of the United States to the Latvian people, to maintain an open dialogue, and to build bridges of understanding.

The center provide for their visitors free access to books, periodicals, videos, CD-ROMs, and the Internet, and they offer cultural programs such as exhibitions, literary events, film showings, and guest lectures on topics related to American life and culture.
