Michael Snowden has been a career member of the Foreign Service at the U.S. Department of State since 1990.  Prior to his nomination as the first U.S. Consul General in Almaty, he most recently served at the U.S. Mission to the United Nations in New York, where he was the Mission's lead multilateral negotiator on sustainable development and environmental issues, including climate change, in the UN General Assembly and in the Economic and Social Council and its subsidiary bodies.  He previously served assignments in the Middle East (Oman, Tunisia, Saudi Arabia), and at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow and at the U.S. Consulate General in St Petersburg, as well as at the U.S. Embassy in Lagos, Nigeria.  At the State Department, Michael Snowden previously served as Desk Officer for Belarus and Moldova.  Mr. Snowden speaks Russian and Arabic.  He is married and has two daughters.
